Spanish Judges Denounce The Government before The UN

UN SR KnaulThree different judges associations have called on the UN to intervene to stop the Spanish Government from “eroding the separation of powers;” i.e., the executive from the judiciary. The judiciary system is supposed to be completely independent from interference or pressure from the governing party.

The Asociación Judicical Francisco de Vitoria, the Jueces para la Democracia, and the Foro Judicial Independente, called on the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Mrs Gabriela Knaul, to intervene because the Government’s legal system reforms are “seriously weakening” both the judicial system and the Rule According to Higher Law.

The Government, they claim, is abusing its absolute majority to push through legislature even though it has be opposed by all other political parties.

As an example the Government recently reformed the Consejo General de Poder Judicial (The General Council of the Judiciary) which is the constitutional body that governs all the Judiciary of Spain, such as courts, and judges. They carried it through brushing aside objections from all opposition parties and judges associations in order to nominate party men to crucial positions within it.

The associations also denounced the political pressure applied by the Government on judges investigating corruption within the governing party.

Editorial comment: Simply said, you can’t trust the Spanish right wing with a parliamentary majority.
