There is so much corruption in Spain that the judicial system just can’t keep up with it. At present just under 2,000 politicians, union leaders etc across the country are facing a judge over corruption charges.

For this reason the Judges for Democracy movement (an association of judges) has decided to denounce; i.e., is suing, the Minister of Justice and the top judicial body, the CGPJ, over the lack of resources, both human and material.

One judge criticised the Spanish Penal Code by saying that it is only fit for trying “chicken thieves” and is not designed to tackle high-level corruption.
