Nobody in the business sector would argue that Salobreña needs hotels, but at the same time there is reticence over losing the vega.

The recently constituted, ecologist/neighbourhood association, Cal y Caña says that the people of Salobreña are moving towards wanting to preserve Salobreña’s “green spaces; its cultural, historic and natural heritage.”

“Salobreña retains the only virgin shoreline on the Costa Granadina, which is now under threat since the recent declarations of the imminent building of hotel complexes on the TH-1,” reads their communiqué.

The objective of this association is to stop speculative urban development and seek, instead, sustainable development, they say. They say that they do not oppose tourism or the arrival of hotels but consider that building development is a failed economic model and that hotels are reduced to “all included” during the half of the year that they are open.
