Molvizar’s New Pumping Station

molvizar pumping station for irrigationQuite a few regional bigwigs got together for the inauguration of a pumping station in the Rambla de Mólvizar.

The new facilities will provide irrigation water for around 200 farmers in the Jete, Salobreña and Itrabo area, as well as Molvízar, thus saving them hefty electricity bills from pumping water out of wells.

“The work has cost a million euros, 150,000 of which was put up by the Junta de Andalucia; an example of cooperation between the private and public sectors,” explained the Governmental Delegate for the province.

The pumping station is fed by water from the Béznar Reservoir and elevates the irrigation water to the 400 – 600 metre height mark, providing plenty of pressure for the farmers below.

This new arrangement means that the farmers are paying 28 centimes per cubic metre instead of 57 centimes.

The Mayor of Salobreña, also present, congratulated the comunidad de regantes (irrigation cooperative) for being “pioneers” in the modernization of the irrigation infrastructure.

The socialist Mayor also took the opportunity to get a shot in at the conservative Central Government over the price of electricity, whilst praising the socialist Regional Government for its part in the project.
