Squatters’ Camp Cleared in Nerja

NRJ Aqueduct OnLThe Nerja Policía Local have assisted municipal cleaning services in the dismantling of illegal settlements near Maro.

A total of three settlements had sprung up in the Acueducto del Águila, which was built in 1880 and is National Heritage. In fact, one of the camps was right under the aqueduct, housing about 20 people.

There was even a pipe connecting the squatters’ huts to the aqueduct to provide a water supply.

The monument is part of the area irrigation system and workers have twice found bricks piled up in the water channel to provide a sort of pool, bringing the water level up to assure a flow of water to the camp below.

When the police and sanitation workers moved in, the camp was empty except for 400 kilos of rubbish.
