Almuñécar Goes to New York

egyptian vase on display at metropolitanThe Metropolitan Art Museum in New York now has amongst its exhibits an archeological artifact from Almuñécar; albeit on a temporary basis.

The object is an Apophis-I-era vase: i.e., 1575 BC – 1540 BC. The vase is carved from grey marble and according to some archeological investigators, it is probably oldest documented object in the Iberian Peninsular.

This temporary exhibition at the Metropolitan, entitled: Assyria to Iberia at the Dawn of the Classical Age, also comprises objects on loan from the British Museum, the Louvre Museum , the Vatican Museums and the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg – this last one is one of the oldest museums in the world, founded in 1764.

The Almuñécar Councillor for Culture, Olga Ruano, says that it is an excellent opportunity to put the town on the “international map.”

The exhibition will run from the 22nd of September until the 4th of January 2015… if you just happen to be out that way around then.
