The Salobreña Mayor has responded to the complaints published in the press by the police union, S.I.P.L., in which they denounced the state of their vehicles.
Subsequently, the Mayor, Gonzalo Fernández Pulido, has publicly recognised the bad state in which some of the police vehicles find themselves and has assured the police union that very soon police transport will be ‘improved.’
He pointed out that if this had not been done before, it was because of a lack of funds, and an attempt to squeeze out as much service life as possible from the said vehicles. He fully recognises that this has reached an end.
He points out, however, although the official vehicles are in a “lamentable state,” at no time has this meant that the police have not been able to carry out their duties; they have been able to use other municipally-owned vehicles, if need be, he said.
He added that not all police work required transportation and that some of it could be carried out on foot, which, he said, is what the locals want – more coppers doing their rounds on foot, so to speak.
Another complaint made by the union was that there have not been enough police officers available to cover the summer needs of the village; an accusation that the Mayor denies.
