The recent fire in Cenes de la Vega, just outside Granada, destroyed 200 hectares of shrub and pine forest before finally being extinguished two days later.
The fire, which broke out simultaneous at two different points, started on Friday around 13.30 and wasn’t completely extinguished until past 21.00h the following Sunday.
The investigation teams on the ground have since found indications that the fire could have been caused as a result of some pseudo-religious ritual. The evidence found was three clay bowls with the remains of candles in them at each of the two points where the fire broke out.
The Infoca investigation believes that the people who had used them might have thought that the candles were out when they left the area, or simply deliberately left then alight but not with the intention of causing a fire. Whatever the case, the result is the same; the biggest fire in the province of Granada this year.
However, although 200 hectares, equivalent to several hundred football pitches in extension, were destroyed, compared to the recent Sierra Nevada/Lanjarón fire that destroyed 2,610 hectares or the 1993 fire in Huétor Santillán that wiped out 6,500 hectares, the destruction was mercifully small by comparison.
