Almuñécar Vega Race

ALM Cross Country OnLThe Nerja athlete, Francisco Urbano and Cristina García were the overall winners of the Almuñécar, vega, cross-country race.

This stomp through the plantations (vega), organized by the Club de Atletismo Sexitano and the Municipal Sports Board, is traditionally held during summer fiestas in Almuñécar.

Over 500 runners took part this year. The organizers had hoped to beat last year’s turn out, but they hadn’t expected to almost double it, which is what happened.

The race was along the asphalted vega lane, starting and finishing next to the José Díaz builders yard. The kids category was the first to start off, then the seniors wheezed into action!

Francisco Urbano took 18 minutes and 40 seconds, followed by Cristian Benítez and in third place Paco López.

In the women’s category the winner was Cristina García followed by Vanessa Sengerre and Estina Sorensen.

Out of the local runners, Luis Carrión and María Teresa Cabrera came in first in their respective gender groups

As for the kiddies’ category (up to 6-years old), Luis Megías and Marina Clemente came in first in their corresponding groups. In the 7-10 category, Luis García and Carmen Monedero came in first. Finally, in the 11-14 category, Daniel Navarro and Virginia Jiménez came in first in the boys and girls category, respectively.
