The police make one arrest every four days in the province where making false insurance claims are concerned.
Put another way, the Guardia Civil have arrested 45 people in the first six months of 2014. This last week there have been three arrests in La Zubia and Pinos Puente.
In the case of Pinos Puente, a 23-year old who had managed to break his top-notch mobile phone, put in a claim to say that it had been stolen in a hotel, so that the establishment’s insurance would cover it.
Unfortunately, the Guardia Civil located the device in a shop in Granada were it had been taken for repair.
And mobiles appear to be the favourite, because recently in Huétor Vega on the 26th of June a young man said that a thief on a scooter had snatched one from his hand as he shot by. Subsequent investigation led the police to believe that he was lying… and he confessed that he was – he had simply lost it in a bar.
The third person was a 69-year-old woman from Las Gabias who reported a break-in at her home, which turned out to be a porkie, (lie) too.
But it’s hardly surprising that mobile-phone thefts are the favourite, mickey-mouse insurance claim because in reality around ten disappear every day in the province, mainly because they are pricey and fetch a good sum on the black market.
