The Zafra in Salobreña

SAL la monda OnLLocals are taking part in a documentary on the sugar-crop heydays in Salobreña and the harvesting, or Zafra/Monda.

The film documentary will look at how the harvesting was done, right up to the last one only a few years ago. The Azucarera del Guadalfeo (sugar factory) was the last of its kind in the whole of Europe.

According to Radio Salobreña, locals are volunteering to take part in period costumes and the fast disappearing burros are being drafted in. The documentary will also include many old photographs from the time.

Thirty locals are gladly taking part, recreating the tasks of the zafra, from the monda (cutting) to the transporting of the cut canes to the factory.

The man behind the project, Juan Fernández, says that it is still in the really early stages of editing, but once its finished, it will be given a public showing in Salobreña before being destined for commercialization.

There is a photo exhibition on at the moment in the building where Radio Salobreña is housed – at the top of town; the one that looks like a ship’s bridge.
