During the Carnival celebrations in Jumilla he had the illuminating idea of dressing up as the Virgin Mary, complete with Semana Santa throne. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it cost him his job.

The local priest, Padre Joaquín Hernández was not impressed, nor were the Semana Santa Brotherhood Board. In short, they considered his fancy dress as irreverent and lacking of respect for The Church.

“What he has done is wound the sensibilities of the believers and Christians,” intoned Chairman on the Brotherhood, Eduardo Spiteri, adding, “I cannot understand, as there are so many fancy dress costumes to choose from, why the Councillor for Fiestas chose the one he did.”
The Councillor tendered his resignation as the municipal representative on the Semana Santa Brotherhood Board before the Mayor, who accepted it.

The Councillor offered his apologies before the 22,500 inhabitants of Jumilla, saying, “I apologize to anybody who might have felt offended – this was not my intention.”

Editorial Comment: Now, can you imagine if it had been a left-wing councillor? One can only imagine that the indignation would have been deafening and calls for his resignation as councillor, prolific. Funny that no such uproar resounds in Jumilla amongst the PP…
