Chilly Almuñécar

ALM hailstones OnLThe most copious reminder of the passing of the cold front was plenty of rain around eight o’clock on Sunday morning, punctuated by thunder and lightning. Readers won’t be surprised to learn that the town’s streets weren’t able to cope with anything more vigorous than a strong shower so that the some streets took on their almost traditional guise of ponds.

Almuñécar also had a rockfall next to Hotel Vitoria Playa (behind Chinasol) causing the road to be blocked for over an hour until it could be cleared up. Next door at the Colegio Público La Noria, the sponge-like quality of the vega caused the playground to be submerged under almost half a metre of water. Almost the same occurred to the Sports Pavilion down the other end of the same road.

What else? Ah, yes, trees blown down on Avenida Costa del Sol and flooded garages along the lower part.

But it was the hailstones, piled up like snow, that surprised and delighted most, so that down on Tesorillo beach, four hours later, there was still a stunted snowman on the beach – made of hailstones, that is!
