Christmas Entertainment in Motril

Plenty of singing and dancing are in store for you in Motríl this Christmas; just take a look at the line-up, where even the kids get a look-in.

Did you realise that it was the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of the great Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi? Well the musical association Al Musikara does and is planning a grand performance of Rococo piano targeted at the children, in the Calderón Theatre on Wednesday 11th December at 6pm. With entrance fees at €2 going towards the charity, Cadena de Favores, it’s a great opportunity to expose your young ones to some classical music!

Talking of music, a fascinating concert and conference (this time for the mums and dads, probably!) is scheduled for Friday 13th from 8pm. Focused on the origin of music in the three major cultures which have contributed so much to Spain’s rich history, El viaje de Ziryab is set to explore how the Jewish, Christian and Islam cultures influenced medieval Spain. Once again at the Teatro Calderón, the group Música Antigua will perform music and instruments; and the entrance free is €5.

If you’re more into a mix of Gothic horror and music, Frankenstein the musical will surprise, entertain and horrify you, as Mary Shelley’s classic is set to music on Saturday 14th from 8pm. Tickets cost from €6 to €10 and prepare to be touched by this original study of the human condition.

Then, for something totally different, Flamenco celebrates Christmas with singing, instrumentals and dancing on Thursday 19th from 9:30pm. With family and religious overtones (highly appropriate for this spiritual time of year) entry to this show at the Teatro Calderón will cost €7.

Should you feel that you’ve missed out on any villancicos (Spanish Christmas carols), the VII Cycle of Christmas Concerts is taking place in public spaces throughout Motríl: Sunday 15th from 8:30pm at the Iglesia Mayor de la Encacarnación; Friday 20th from 7:30pm in the Plaza de las Palmeras; Saturday 21st from 8:30pm at the Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnación; Sunday 22nd from 7:30pm at the Iglesia de Capuchinos; Thursday 26th at 7:30pm in the Plaza de los Jardinillos and Saturday 28th at 7:30pm in the Plaza de los Jardinillos. All these concerts are performed by different local choirs and are free to the public to enjoy!

If you’re in search of dance, you can’t go past the XXV Encuentro con la Danza on both the 20th and 21st December. We haven’t been told the time that this starts, so best to approach the theatre directly, with tickets costing €6 in aid of funds for the great Three Kings’ parade that the town puts on for Epiphany (the night of the 5th January).

Finally, as we mentioned earlier, lots of kids’ shows this month, including the musical Pulgarcita (female version of Tom Thumb). The performance will take place on 26th from 5:30pm and tickets cost €8-€12.

An interactive show, La Pandilla de Drilo will be on offer on Saturday 28th also at 5:30pm and the entrance fee is €5.

If your children enjoy dinosaurs and the like, then Sunday 29th from 5:30pm at the Calderón Theatre is the place for you with Aventura en el Jurásico. Prepared to be scared (not by the tickets though, as these are still €6-€10).

Have a great Festive Season!
