Farmers Abandon Town Hall Protest

ALM Farmer Sit-in OnLA group of Almuñécar farmers staged a sit-in within the Town Hall in protest over a lack of support following massive crop losses. The sit-in, which lasted two days, received much support locally, both from political parties as well as local associations.

The recent hailstorm caused an estimated 9-million euros in crop loss, as well as damage to the trees which will reduce next year’s crop by at least 50%.

The cause of this protest action has been that a more recent hailstone disaster in El Ejido, flattening greenhouses and destroying the crop, received almost immediate administrative aid whereas Almuñécar to date has received none.

Knowing that they had the tacit support of the local political branches of the PP, PSOE and CA/PA, the farmers decided to stage the said sit-in, which they only agreed to abandon after receiving a promise from the Provincial Delegate for Agriculture for the Junta de Andalucia, Inmaculada Oria, to hear them out in Granada.
