You wouldn’t be the first person to have arrived on the Costa Tropical who thought, “Wow, all they do is celebrate festivals here!” Although it seems as though the locals are busy setting up marquees, enjoying lots of food and drink, playing ridiculously loud music and generally celebrating life pretty much every week, the reality is that there are truly only a few key events.
One of these which is of particular importance is San Miguel on and around the 29th of September. Clearly, this is going to be a pretty big one, simply because in Almuñécar we have a castle and barrio (neighbourhood) named in his honour and therefore he is considered to be the other main patron of the town.
Quite convenient, really, when you think that Saint Michael features in so many religions and after all, this town has had so many faiths pass through here and leave their mark!
Although activities are inevitably focused (from the Friday night) in and around the castle area set above the old town, people have in recent years become especially keen on introducing sporting events about the town to coincide with this weekend.
For instance, not only is there the ever-popular fishing competition on Velilla beach, set for early Sunday morning, but the very same morning, the prestigious Andalusian BMX Tropical Championships take place on the Galera Track, just beside the Bahia Tropical Hotel in Playa Pozuelo, Taramay. Something for young and old!
