Cycling up the Sierra Nevada

AND Bikes Sierra Nevada OnLWell it may not quite be Camino de Santiago, but the challenge that brave local and foreign cyclists faced in reaching the peaks of Sierra Nevada, was not far short of a religious sporting experience! Certainly, at those heights, you can’t be far from heaven’s gates.

Early Sunday 15th September, a group of approximately 30 intrepid souls ranging in age from 15 to 60, caught a bus in Almuñécar, that brought them to the scenic sledging area of the Sierra Nevada ski resort.

From this point, the fun began with climbs reaching some 3,000 metres above sea level, experiencing dramatic changes in landscape as well as temperatures.

Passing through snow and moonscape that led between this zone and La Alpujarra, the fearsome band of men, women and teenagers arrived some 45km later in Bubión, battered but not beaten by this invigorating experience!

If you’re interested in joining one of the many cycling groups that are so very active in this fabulous area, and feel up for the challenge of an amazing ride, why not speak directly to Bernardo or Maria José of Berbikes, located on Calle Guadíx (which runs alongside the Rio Seco) in Almuñécar. You can also check out their Facebook page at Berbikes bicicletas for upcoming events, offers and organised rides.

Alternatively, in Alhama de Granada, Terry & lisa have been running the successful Bike & Hike business, where you can buy or rent all kinds of bicycles for touring around that area. You can find out more about them HERE
