Alcampo Controversy in Motril

The governing party’s plan to expand building land around the Alcampo supermarket has met stern opposition from the IU party.

Motril Councillor, José Luis Chica, pointed out that the area is already a consolidated business area, which is to be increased by 18% and that the said land has no ecological value or special protection status. He said that the land would be used to create an incentive to attract new businesses to the area and thus create more employment. He said that some businesses had already shown interest in the project.

Councillor José Luis Chica declared that small business in the town centre should be able to “coexist in harmony” with shopping centres, as is the case in other cities across Andalucia and Spain.

He also considers that the IU is “out of contact with reality” and are bent upon creating obstacles for municipal development.

So, much for the PP governing party and now onto the IU position.

The IU lodged their opposition to the plant (announced in July) because the land is categorized as non-building land and Traditional Farming Protection. The governing party had changed this category to allow the project to go ahead.

However, their Town Halls own report reflected, Motril already has 235,000 sq/m of building land available for shopping and leisure installations, both private and public, which is more than enough, the IU considers, to guarantee the town’s needs in the present and near future. This existing available land is scattered around several areas of the town.

For these reasons, the IU considers the re-categorizing of the land around Alcampo not only as unnecessary, but as prejudicial to small shop owners.
