The Policia Nacional has arrested a 40-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman in the Málaga Airport car parks for stealing unwary tourists’ baggage.
The couple, both Moroccan, allegedly belong to a gang dedicated to this kind of theft, targeting tourists who have just arrived.
The police have charged them over three incidents in particular and one at Granada Airport. According to police investigations the gang always targets travellers with young children and lots of baggage; i.e., adults with their attention divided between keeping an eye on their offspring and watching over their belongings.
The thieves follow their intended victims to their cars or nearby and one of them approaches and asks them a question in a language other than the one that they have heard them conversing in; asking for directions, for example. With the victims distracted by the first thief, the accomplice nips in and makes off with an item of luggage.
Advice: if you have lots of luggage and children, don’t stop to answer questions until you’ve loaded everybody and everything into your hire car.
