Boat Fire off Almuñécar/Salobreña

Just after 19.30h yesterday evening, beach users witnessed a boat go up in flames about a nautical mile out.

The emergency call centre 112 received around 50 calls to say that a thick plume of black smoke was coming from a small craft out to sea, somewhere between Almuñécar and Salobreña, not far from the fish pens.

Several small vessels set out from the beach area to lend assistance and the two crew members from the 7-metre-long pleasure craft, who had jumped into the sea to escape the flames, were picked up. Shortly afterwards the Guardia Civil patrol ship arrived.

The craft eventually sank, consumed by the flames. Nobody was injured in the incident.
