The Aula del Mar (Classroom of the Sea) has begun its awareness campaign for the protection of marine fauna and flora along the Almuñécar coast.
As part of this campaign, on the 3rd of July they installed a “marine laboratory” on the Puerta del Mar beach, where children and even interested adults could learn about the importance of protecting the underwater meadows of poseidon seaweed. The talk and explanation was given by marine biologist, Juan Jesús Martín, who is the campaign coordinator.
Informative talks were also given in La Herradura, before the VI Laboratorio Marino moved on to Nerja.
This seabed meadows, stretching along the Cerro Gordo/Cantarriján coastal, marine reserve, is an efficient indication of the health of the seawater as the presence of contamination affects it drastically. Another threat are illegal fishing nets that scour the seabed, ripping the meadows apart.
