Mayor Stoned

A man from Itrabo has been found guilty of attacking a Guardia Civil policeman with an axe and throwing large stones and glass bottles at the Mayor.

The man was tried at the Motril Criminal Court and sentenced to ten months in a psychiatric prison ward.

The incident occurred on the 21st of April, 2010 in Ítrabo, when two workers attempted to removed accumulated rubble and building material that had been dumped in the street. At this point a man rushed out of his house, armed with an axe and suggested, convincingly, that they should desist from this endeavour.

Having heard what had happened, two days later the Mayor approached the spot, flanked by the two workers. This time they were met by a barrage of bricks, stones and glass bottles. The Mayor retreated.

A little later that same day, two workers, one mayor, backed by two Guardia Civil policeman approached the trouble spot. Out rushed the man with an axe with the intention of striking one of the policemen with it, which he would have achieved had the second policeman not disarmed him.
