Lucky Lola

A 78-year-old woman from Motril had two heart attacks right in the middle of a central street but lives to tell the tale.

Lola Robles, who has the local nickname of Buena Moza (Good Lass), went out on 30th of November (Halloween… Yikes!) to run a couple of errands. She soon began to feel dizzy, so she went around to the emergency department of the Santa Ana Hospital. They diagnosed “cervicales,” (neck complaint that produces dizziness) gave her a note for medication to obtain from the pharmacists and sent her on her way.

However, once back on the street, she was soon staggering all over the place before falling over, into the arms of a couple of painters – she didn’t know it but she had just suffered a heart attack and death was peaking around the corner.

But she was in he hands of two ‘guardian angels;’ A child monitor, Gerardo Romano, and a municipal policeman, José Miguel Pérez. Between them they managed to resuscitate her. Lola’s heart had stopped beating so Gerardo gave her mouth-to-mouth and José Miguel supplied the heart massage – both men had previously met in a First-Aid course given by the Red Cross.

In one moment they had brought a pulse back but it faded again, yet they persisted until they had a good pulse and regular breathing, which was when they probably started breathing again. After that, with her condition stabilized, the ambulance arrived, congratulated the two men on their crucial intervention, and took Lola to hospital.

Lola had lost her husband – a well known Motril postman – a couple of years back and had been depressed since then, but since this incident she thinks that she has been given a second chance which has changed her whole perspective on her life. She also feels that she has two new sons, to whom she is eternally grateful for saving her life.
