Lad Beats Grandparents with Baseball Bat

A 22-year-old man was arrested by the Guardia Civil in Benamocarra (Axarquía), accused of attacking his own grandparents with a baseball bat.

The attack, which occurred in their home in the Avenida de Blas Infante, took place around 23.30h on Thursday the 16th. The man allegedly gave the elderly couple, aged 70 and 73, a brutal beating with the bat.

“We just cannot explain what could have gone through his head for him to do such a thing; he’s a completely normal young man with no money or drug problems and he is in no way a violent person or one that gets into fights,” explained one of his uncles.

As a consequence of the attack, the grandfather has broken fingers on both hands, as well as a badly bruised forearm, which requires immediate surgical intervention. Such is his condition, complicated by respiratory problems that the doctors at the area hospital in Vélez-Málaga are considering transferring him to Hospital Carlos Haya in the city of Málaga.

As for the 70-year-old grandmother, she has a fractured elbow and a broken finger on the same arm and is awaiting surgical intervention.

According to the said uncle, the man and his girlfriend had dinner with the elderly couple that evening, after which the younger couple went outside to smoke a cigarette. Moments later, the accused, whose initials are, M.L.J. went back into the dwelling and sat for a while with the grandmother on the sofa and asked her about her husband’s health, as he was now in bed upstairs.

After that, accounts are sketchy. According to another uncle, the accused allegedly went up to the elderly man’s room, saying that he was going to throw himself out of the window, but instead he found the bat on top of a wardrobe and started hitting his grandfather with it.

When she heard the shouts, the grandmother rushed upstairs, which was when the assailant allegedly turned his attention to her. Then the girlfriend ran upstairs, and the young man ran out of the house without saying a word.

Moments later he returned, asking what had happened and if he had caused his grandfather much harm…

Mysterious, indeed.
