Ex-regional MP for the PP, Santiago Cervera claims that he had been set up when he turned up at an arranged pick-up point and that he had not tried to blackmail a bank director.
The Director of Caja Navarra, José Antonio Asiain, had received an email telling him to deposit 25,000 euros in a crack in a city wall in Pamplona on the 9th of December, if he failed to do so, certain prejudicial information about the running of the bank would be made public. He informed the police and they staked out the pick-up point and along comes our conservative politician and searches the spot. He was arrested.
However, the defence lawyer for Sr. Cervera claims that his client also received a mysterious email telling him that he would find interesting information about the running of Caja Navarra at the said location…
It is now up to the judge to decide if the politician is telling the truth.
