A 32-year-old man, who had been convicted of wife beating, decided to murder his 6-year-old daughter before hanging himself. The incident occurred in Campillos, Málaga on the 1st of April

It was the man’s brother-in-law (the girl’s uncle) who came across the man hanging from the stair banisters and the small girl, Leonor, lying lifeless on the bed after having been suffocated by her father. The uncle had come to collect the girl because he had to put her on a train for Mataró, where her mother lived. The girl had spent the Easter with her father, thanks to a custody arrangement with the mother.

Diego G.P. had been given a suspended sentence of six month for domestic violence in December. The sentence also included a court order to maintain his distance from the victim for two years.

As a consequence of this crime calls are being made for visiting rights to be automatically suspended for anybody convicted of domestic violence as it is illogical that an aggressor is forbidden from approaching the victim but has access to a child in her custody.
