Twin sisters Louise and Martine Fokkens, both 70-years-old, have decided to finally retire. They have decided that working after you reach 70 is just too much.

Oh… I forgot to mention that both these ladies have been prostitutes in Amsterdam’s red light district for over 50 years. They believe they were the oldest ‘working girls’ in the city and there has even been a film made about them, a documentary entitled Meet The Fokkens.

The reasons for their retirement are, in the case of Louise, who incidentally is a mother-of-four, cannot perform some of the required positions as they have become ‘too painful,’ whereas, her sister Martine, a mother-of-three, has just found that there has been a recent and dramatic drop in custom. Mind you, they estimate that they have ‘performed’ for around 355,000 men between them (in some cases literally), over the years and they also feel that enough is enough.

The sisters are hoping that money from film rights and one elderly customer who has been regularly whipped and spanked for so many years they just can’t bring themselves to abandon him, will give them a reasonable lifestyle outside of prostitution. Speaking of the old man who has been their client for longer than they can remember, Martine muses, “I couldn’t give him up. He’s been coming to me for so long it’s like going to church on a Sunday.”

She also believes that despite the legalization of Brothels in the Netherlands in 2000, the plight of the working girls has improved very little, “It’s better for the pimps and the foreigners, but not for the Dutch girls.”
