The owner of the entertainment company, Divertt, Miguel Ángel Flores, who organized a macro-fiesta at the Madrid Arena in which five young girls were crushed to death, has been jailed as the judge received reliable information that he was preparing to flee the country.
Miguel Flores, who had initially been freed pending trial, is the key figure amongst the accused. According to police investigators, Sr. Flores had taken the decision to flee the country after it became clear that all emerging information pointed to his being responsible. One of the facts to come to light was that a total of 16,791 tickets had been sold when the maximum capacity for the hall was only 10,000.
One very incriminating piece of evidence is CCTV footage that apparently shows him on the very night of the Halloween-party tragedy allegedly trying to hide records of just how many tickets had been sold. When this video came to light, the lawyers of four of the victims formally requested the immediate arrest of Sr. Flores.
The political repercussions are also taking their toll on the City Council, headed by Mayor Ana Botella, who is the wife of ex-Prime Minister, José María Aznar. She has already accepted the resignation of the councillor responsible for the leasing of this publicly owned venue, Madrid Arena. Calls for her resignation are growing.
