Castell de Ferro’s Chiringuito Bajamare was completely gutted by fire. According to the Mayor, Eloy Marín, there had been a previous attempt to burn the chiringuito on Playa Cambriles, but which the Motril Fire Service had managed to put out before it could do much damage.
Although their has been no forensic report, the two fires at this night bar-cum-chiringuito strongly indicate arson. On the first occasion the owner was still on the premises and he was able to help put the fire out before the fire service arrived, but he had already left when the latest fire began at two in the morning on Thursday the 11th.
The chiringuito has had problems with its neighbours, who had denounced the business because of the noise, but the Mayor fully backed the place because it has been an integral part of the town for many years.
“It’s important that people can sleep,” explained the Mayor, “and in fact the owner had spent a lot of money soundproofing the premises. Besides, one must take into account the fundamental roll that it has among young people.” He said that it was important that they could find somewhere to go without having to get onto the main road to go for a drink, with all the danger that entails.
The Mayor promised to help the owner all he could to get it back up and running.
