Guadix Roman Theatre

The Town Hall of Guadix has presented a project to the Junta de Andalucía for the conservation of the city’s Roman theatre.

“Today is a great day for the city,” said the Mayor, José Antonio González, flanked by just about every councillor in the municipal administration, whilst showering the monument with almost paternal praise; “It’s a hidden treasure and a fantastic project,” he beamed.

The project needs a budget of 306,000 euros with a completion date – once it is started, of only two months, as far as the work on the actual Roman monument goes, but there are other jobs included, such as providing parking for visitors, for example. Even if approved, the work won’t commence until Spring; once the inclement winter weather has passed.

The project ‘finished product’ will comprise of the restored monument itself, parking, and a green area next to the Torreón del Ferro. There will also be public toilets on the corner with Mariana Pineda.

As for the monument itself, 290 metres will be open to the public for viewing, which will entail the removal of a great deal of earth to reach down to the Huerta de los Lao level.

Good luck on that one and looking forward to seeing the finished product!
