Clearing the Beaches of Debris

The Town Hall of Almuñécar and the company that holds the contract for keeping the town’s beaches clean have been busy since the heavy downpour, putting the beaches back in order.

The sea had thrown up a great deal of vegetation, washed down by the rivers from higher up – the rivers from the beaches up to the N-340 have had the vegetation removed prior to the heavy rains. Two rubbish-collection craft denominated as Pelicanos, have been skimming off the broken reeds and other plants that still hadn’t reached the beaches.

La Herradura Bay is particularly prone to this kind of debris after heavy rains, thanks to the two ramblas (wadis) as well as Río Jate. Quite a lot of flotsam reaches this beach from Nerja way as well, brought by the poniente current and wind – the appearance of untreated sewage, for example, doesn’t come from La Herradura or Almuñécar, but from Nerja, which doesn’t have a sewage-treatment plant yet.

According to Luis Aragón, who is the Councillor for the Environment, just on the first day that the two small boats were out, they fished out six large rubbish bins that had been washed out to sea.
