193 Generous Souls

That is the number of Almuñequeros that turned up to donate blood to the Centro Regional de Transfusión Sanguínea, who set up shop at the Social Services Centre Paquita Ruiz, which is just behind the La Paloma gasoline station.

Twenty hospital beds were set up in the public-acts hall. Of the people that ‘occupied’ them, 132 donated blood and 57 donated plasma. The blood etc donated was equivalent to what is consumed in the province in one day. These mobile units collected 91% of a total of 37,622 donations during 2011, which was up on 2010.

Granada has a ration of 49.2 donations per 1,000 inhabitants, which is very close to what the World Health Organization considers ‘optimum;’ 50 donations per 1,000. This puts the province considerably above the national and regional average, both of which are around 37 donations per 1,000.

Bloody wonderful!
