Police Not Silly

A man from Mamola (coastal town to the east of Motril) was arrested by the Guardia Civil, accused of submitting a false robbery report with the aim of illegally obtaining compensation from his car insurance company. A car mechanic in Castell de Ferro was also arrested in connection.

The man had gone round to the Guardia Civil post in Castell de Ferro and reported that his car had been badly damaged and parts removed whilst it had been parked outside his cortijo in the mountain village of Lújar. A police-investigation team based in Motril decided to look into it and discovered that the man had allegedly been in connivance with a car-repair garage in a plan to get 5,600 euros out of the insurance company.

The two had removed valuable pieces and scratched the body work in numerous places, which, the garage owner reported, would cost over 5,000 euros to put right. However, the Guardia Civil, after searching the garage, came up with its ‘missing’ customized wheels and tyres, carefully hidden away.
