The Mayor of Almuñécar’s party, the PP, have denounced the ‘squandering’ allegedly carried out by the previous mayor, Juan Carlos Benavides. According to the PP, the ex-Mayor rewarded his ‘faithful followers’ with trips to some of the towns that are twinned with Almuñécar.
The PP has been through the accounts from that period and come up with a total bill for 123,000 euros spent on ‘slap up meals’ and such trips as mentioned above, adding that the ex-Mayor himself spent more time in Morocco than Almuñécar during his last mandate.
The PP consider that those in a position of authority should set an example. They promised to give more details on this affair soon, concluding that Juan Carlos Benavides had committed ‘completely illegitimate’ practices, void of the most minimum of ethics and which go against the laws on transparency.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch… the Convergencia Andaluza (Ex-Mayor’s party) claim that the present Mayor, Trinidad Herrera, is breaking the law by denying them access to information on ‘members of local corporations (public staff),’ thereby thwarting the ‘the legitimate control exercised by municipal opposition parties.’
The CA claim that they have made repeated requests for information concerning payments made by the governing party, receiving in turn ‘silence or excuses.’ The CA considers that this runs in the face of the governing party’s claim to be a ‘transparent administration.’ They also claim that this attitude is only applied to them, whilst other opposition parties (PSOE & IU) have free access to this kind of information.
The CA considers that the Mayor acts with arrogance and a lack of democratic behaviour.
Editorial Note: Strangely enough, this sort of accusation (denying access) was constantly levelled at the previous CA administration by all the other opposition parties, including the PP, when they were in the opposition.
