A regional Member of Parliament, who is also the Chairman of a workers union (S.A.T), led a raid on a Mercadona supermarket to ‘expropriate’ basic food stuffs for charity food banks.
This surprising action occurred in Ecíjar just before a similar raid, led by another union member in Arcos de la Frontera (Cádiz), but with less success. Condemnation, however, has been widespread across the political spectrum with even the food banks refusing to accept these stolen items.
“In these difficult times of crisis, when the people are being expropriated, we want to expropriate the expropriators; that’s to say the large-land owners, banks and shopping chains, who are making money right in the middle of this economic crisis,” declared the MP, Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo, who thanks to his condition of being a Member of Parliament, enjoys immunity from normal arrest and can only be tried via the Supreme Court, who would strip him of this category so that he can stand before a judge.
Sr. Sánchez Gordillo, belongs to the far-left, IU party, which has refused to condemn his actions to date. The PSOE (centre-left party) and the PP (conservatives) have outrightly condemned this act of ‘pillage.’
The ex-leader of the IU, Gaspar Llamazares, however, said that the Government should be doing something about the hungry and impoverished citizens instead of wasting time trying to hunt “Robin Hoods.”
