This time it is the Almuñécar Town Hall that has to return money to taxpayers after over charging them for their property tax (IBI).
However, unlike Salobreña, which had charged non-registered residents a greater amount than registered residents and has been ordered to return the money, in Almuñécar’s case it was that certain IBI bills had been paid twice; both through a direct debit and paying directly into the tax office.
The Town Hall could have dragged its bureaucratic feet or even announced that the money would be deducted from the following year’s payment, as seems to be the way when individuals come up against a large entity, such as phone or electricity companies, but not the new administration under Trinidad Herrera. She decided that the 166 people who had been charged double would have their money returned now, meaning that the municipal coffers will have to part with just under 21,360 euros.
The first step is that the said individuals will receive notification of the pending transfer in their favour, followed by the funds themselves.
The Mayoress summed up the situation, “It is money that does not belong to us, therefore, out of honesty, we consider that it must be returned.”
