For this reason, amongst others, the Town Council has launched a campaign entitled: Juega Limpio on Salobreña, which is a play on words, meaning both play fair and play clean. And they are counting heavily on the Salobreña International Club to achieve it.
The Mayor, Councillor for the Environment and members of the said club, armed with paint brushes, began erasing the unsightly enquiries as to Pepilla’s whereabouts, along with other graffiti, but this was just the first step in a campaign to fight back against a whole host of anti-social actions, such as mining public footpaths with malicious, canine offerings, as well as putting rubbish out at any hour of the day, instead of the appropriate times.
So, together with the ultimatum to property owners of empty building plots, full of rubbish, or derelict/neglected old-town houses, the Mayor seems to be pretty determined to spruce up the town.
He holds up the International Club as an example for other associations and collectives to follow, because as one club member pointed out, “Salobreña’s chief income is tourism.”
