Almost like a perverse San Juan, Salobreña experiences, around this time of year, arsonist attacks along the beach, between the Peñon and La Guardia.

A fire was reported on the night of Monday the 12th, around 23.30, as four chozas (rudimentary cane shelters, put together as seasonal beach huts) went up in flames. Initial investigation points towards arson, which is no surprise, as at the close of summer somebody always torches these constructions.

This time, locals had a bit of a scare, because a camping gas bottle exploded, around midnight, causing spontaneous and widespread bowel evacuation, understandably.

This area does not belong to the town, it now belongs to the Junta de Compensacion, as the land between the Peñon and La Guardia was purchased to form part of the TH1 project; i.e. the hotel-area development. As the land is in a sort of limbo; i.e., it no longer belongs to the original owners and the hotel project hasn’t budged, there’s nobody to stop people knocking up these sugar-cane, Falcon Crest that are cropping up.

Things are further complicated by the fact that some hitherto land owners have ‘verbal permission’ to continue to use the land in the meantime. Some land owners have become members of the Junta de Compensacion, so nobody really knows who is supposed to be there and who is not.
