The Almunequeros were not impressed when it became generally known that the La Herradura blue zone summer hours had been lifted, whereas the Almunecar ones hadn’t.
When the Granada daily, Ideal, announced that all the blue zones in both towns had been lifted from the beginning of September, the Seaside Gazette was surprised to find blue-zone staff still patrolling the parking areas in Velilla. After enquiring, it became clear that contrary to what the Ideal had said, the ‘lifting’ had only occurred in La Herradura.
And we weren’t alone, because there has been a general air of annoyance that Almunecar residents have to put up with the blue zones until the end of this month; a full 30 days later than neighbouring La Herradura.
Apparently, this favourable treatment was not the fruit of the present Town Council, but one that was reached when Juan Carlos Benavides was in the driving seat. Reportedly, the Mayor had been concerned by the ‘negative vibes’ coming out of the La Herradura business sector… and the municipal elections were just around the corner. He needn’t have bothered as La Herradura relegated his party into fourth place at the voting urns, bless him.
