The number of attacks and aggression in general that is being carried out against doctors and medical staff by members of the general public is growing. What occurred in Estepona is just one more case within the growing phenomenon.
This time, the attack occurred inside an ambulance and was actually carried out by one of the patients being transported to the Estepona medical centre.
In the early hours of one Sunday morning in June the ambulance in question was called out to attend to a road accident. They took one look at the traffic-accident victim and loaded him into the back of the ambulance, accompanied by a doctor and a male nurse.
For reasons unknown – we can only suppose that he had been drinking and didn’t want a doctor’s report including such details – the man started by pushing the doctor and male nurse around. Seeing the commotion in the back of the vehicle, the driver radioed the Guardia Civil, requesting that they intercepted the ambulance at a given point, but before they could reach the rendezvous, the driver pulled over onto the hard should of the autovía to help out his colleagues.
Taking advantage of the open back doors, the patient ran off, down the autovia with the doctor, male nurse and driver in pursuit. Eventually the patient was tracked down by the Guardia Civil and arrested before he caused an accident or got himself killed
