Reluctant Villagers

Returning to the elections, but on an anecdotal note, Lentegi with its teeming population of 340 inhabitants takes the biscuit (wins) when it comes to electoral oddities.

On the fateful day of the 22nd, three parties (PP,PSOE & IU) had a list of ten councillor candidates each – no problem! The PSOE’s top candidate; i.e., candidate for Mayor was Antonio Ramírez, the IU had Juan Manuel Arellano and the PP had Jose María Fajardo – no problem!

When the votes were counted, the PSOE drew a massive 127 votes, followed by the IU, close on their heels with 120 and the PP with… nine votes! Wait a moment!

In other words, the only people to vote for the PP were the candidate themselves, and then, not even all of them! One of the PP candidates either didn’t vote for his party or didn’t vote at all!

The old timers up there will tell you that like in many small villages, the locals vote for the person, irrespective of the party he belongs to – everybody knows everybody and they might have different political perspectives, but that is put aside when choosing the person to govern the village.

It doesn’t help that the top PP candidate lives in Almunecar, although he has a house in the village, whilst the rest of the other PP candidates are out-an-out outsiders. They’re not going to vote for somebody that they don’t even know or grew up with.
