Meanwhile, over in Sevilla, two town-hall clerks were arrested for allegedly stealing from the building for the last twelve years.
The Guardia Civil carried out a surprise search at the Town Hall and carted off the two clerks, whom, it is considered, might have accrued over a million euros… illicitly! *Gasp!*
When the 20,000-strong population heard that the Guardia Civil had swooped and were carrying out a thorough search of the building, their immediate and collective thought was, corruption!
The socialist mayor, finely tuned to raging rumour, immediately made it known that it had nothing to do with the saintly politicians, but was a police operation to catch two suspects in fraganti, bless them. In fact, it was the Mayor himself that provided the tip off to the police.
The two men are accused of fabricating false identities on the municipal payrolls, opening up accounts in their names and regularly transferring the fictitious workers’ salaries into them. As you can imagine, such a practice over the extended period of twelve years involved handsome amounts of loot.
