The Blue Zone; ah, yes. We reported last month that our Honorable Mayor had decided to postpone this regulation, in the face of opposition from businesses based around La Playa. The original idea was to impose parking fees for anybody not displaying a ‘Resident’ sticker inside their windshield.
Anyway, it now appears that we may have given too much credit to the business group. After all, Hizzoner (His Honour) did say it had nothing to do with their protest.
Transpires he was (probably) correct. It wasn’t the business group who stopped it, after all. It was La Junta de Andalucía. This governing body deemed the proposal to be ‘discriminatory;’ i.e. illegal. As in, you must treat everybody the same. Ah, you say; correct decision! But, this is Spain, and everything is political. It seems the proposal was not that well presented in the first place; and it came from a PP Mayor, to a PSOE Junta.
Not a chance in hell of being approved. Notwithstanding the fact that similar plans are in force in much larger Towns – e.g. Málaga, Fuengirola and more – all of which are run by PSOE majorities. Anyway, the good news is you don’t have to worry about it, for this summer anyway. Which leaves our Mayor scratching his head, trying to find ways in which to raise revenues from a shrinking tax base.
