The Bard Comes to the Costa

PP Shakespeare OnLEnglish speaking residents and visitors to the Costa Tropical will have a rare chance to see Shakespeare’s greatest comedy live in January, when a theatre company from Staffordshire brings A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the cultural centres of Salobreña and Almuñécar.
The Trentham Shakespeare Company was formed three years ago specifically to present open-air Shakespeare in Trentham Gardens, near Stoke-on-Trent. The group has so far presented A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It and The Taming of the Shrew in the open-air to audiences in Staffordshire but, unfortunately, this year the weather has beaten them and so they have decided to come and perform in sunny Spain.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is thought to be Shakespeare’s first play and is certainly his funniest. The tale of a group of rough workmen working to present a classical play for the Duke’s wedding, and how it goes all wrong when they get involved in the quarrel between Oberon and Titania, the King and Queen of the Fairies, is one the Bard’s best loved plays. The character of Bottom, who gets turned into an ass and has the fairy queen fall in love with him, is one of the most famous- and funny – roles in English literature.
Most of the company’s original cast of The Dream will be coming to Spain, and the production will be stunning to look at.
Tickets for the performance in Salobreña on Wednesday 27th January from the Auditorio, the Casa de la Cultura and the Tourist Information Office; and in Almuñécar on Friday 29th January from Delfin Bookshop and Centro Commercial Radiovision in both Motril and Almuñecar.
