La Herradura Fire

Fire swept through over a hectare of land in the area of La Herradura known as Pago de La Mezquita. Whilst not as severe or life threatening as fires elsewhere in Spain recently, the wind did whip up the flames so much that Almuñécar fire crews asked for the assistance of a helicopter from Infoca.
The crews managed to get the flames under control, and the fire was extinguished in a little over an hour. The only casualties were a number of almond and olive trees and a large area of scrubland.
This is a timely reminder of just how careful we must be when driving or walking out of town, as just one thoughtlessly discarded cigarette-end could bring down a world of problems on the area.
