Almuñécar’s Public Art Festival

At the moment there is a Public Art Festival, entitled, Trópica, running in Almuñécar until the 31st, which, as its name suggests, features activities open to the public.

The festival has been arranged by artist Javier Domenech and wants to take art out of its usual spaces and bring it to the streets, squares, and corners of the municipality, inviting residents and visitors to discover them in a different way.

Mayor Juan José Ruiz Joya said, “It is a good opportunity to enjoy art in a different way and discover some of our spaces from another perspective. Furthermore, this type of initiative helps Almuñécar maintain cultural activity throughout the year and allows artists from different disciplines to find a place here to showcase their work.”

Artists such as Simón Zabell, Laura Segura, Ilaria Degradi, and Victoria Gee, along with the studio Kauh Arquitectos, amongst others, will participate in the event.

You will be able to find examples of their art in the Palacete de la Najarra, the surroundings of the San Miguel Castle, and the old town of Almuñécar, for example.

At the Palacete de la Najarra, Simón Zabell will host an event with the collaboration of Cosentino, an Almería-based company specialised in surfaces for architecture and design, known for materials such as Dekton and Silestone.

All events count on the collaboration of students of the Performing Arts Baccalaureate from the IES Al-Ándalus high school in Almuñécar.

Tomorrow, the programme includes workshops and a lecture on public art by Miguel Moreno Carretero, at 19:30h at the Casa de la Juventud (Youth Centre).

On Friday the 30th, starting at 18:00h., there will be a guided tour setting off from the Casa de la Juventud to visit the various artworks, with the participation of the artists themselves. That same evening, at 20:0h, Plaza Marruecos will host the official opening of the festival, featuring a sound display by Ilaria Degradi.

The activities will conclude on Saturday the 31st, with a day of water sports activities in La Herradura, organised in collaboration with local businesses.
