It’s taken 15 years but finally things are beginning to move concerning the restoration of the Castillo La Rábita.

The Town Council of Albuñol has awarded the contract to draft the basic & execution plans for the castle’s restoration. This project draft should be completed by the end of next month. After that, it has to pass to the Junta for its approval (Department of Culture) as well as the necessary works licences before the building contract goes out to tender.
There are two parts to it: a new archaeological study to document the castle’s structural history, and the partial conservation work, as well as, creating new green spaces in the surrounding plots.
The fortress has been closed to the public all year, except for a single day on September the 7th for the Moros y Cristianos festival parade.
The total planned budget is 330,000 euros, which is financed using a 198,000-euro grant from the Provincial Council and 132,000 euros from the Town-Hall coffers, plus an additional 100,000 euros from the Agrarian Employment Promotion Program (PFEA). This last 100,000 is a bit dodgy, really, as it is supposed to be spent on agricultural employment, not monument restoration.
Anyway, The Mayor of Albuñol, María José Sánchez, said that the castle holds immense cultural and historical value for the identity of the municipality and its future generations.
