It’s strange that a coast that boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year with temperatures than never go below zero, more than half of its hotels close their doors at the end of the high season.

Some close for repairs, improvements etc, others stay open because there is less competition and to catch the smaller fish, like the state-sponsored, holiday scheme for pensioners (Imserso).

Let’s start with Hotel Albayzín del Mar in Almuñécar on Avenida Costa del Sol, which closes at the end of this month and will fire up again in March for Easter. Hotel Playacálida (Taramay), Hotel Sol Los Fenicios, Hotel Best Alcázar both in La Herradura, and Hotel On Aleta Room (Paseo de San Cristóbal) will do the same.

On the other hand, Hotel Elba de Motril, Hotel Bahía de Almuñécar (town centre), Hotel Bahía Tropical (Taramay) and Hotel Playa Victoria stay open throughout the low season, as will Hotel Salobreña Suites.

Some hotels like Bahía de Almuñécar and Bahía Tropical plan to carry out renovation work whilst they still have hotel guests, and we’re not just talking about shutting down foors, but even working on common areas. But they’re not waited to start until now but have been changing the decor and updating the facilities for some months on a smaller scale.

Hotel Victoria Playa will be renovating rooms in batches of 20 or 25 at a time, because there is just not enough time to get them all done in one go and that won’t be until after Easter with enough time to get the selected rooms finished before summer.

Now, Hotel Helios in Almuñécar, which normally stays open all year round, closed its door at the end of autumn 2025 for a major overhaul, inside and out. The improvement work, which involves new aircon systems, bettering economy energy use, as well, has a budget of 3m euros.

Hotel Playacálida will be a ghost town from the beginning of November until mid-January to get the work done in time for reopening in March for Easter.

Over in La Herradura, Hotel Sol Los Fenicios has been closing for the off-season ever since it first opened its doors, and this year will be no exception.

As for Hotel Salobreña Suites, we’ll be leaving that for the paper edition of the November Gazette.
