If It Doesn’t Fit, Don’t Force It

You can put up all the street signs warning driver that there is a very narrow street ahead, yet somebody will try and squeeze their vehicle through it, taking out the paintwork on both sides of the car and the mirrors.

Normally, it’s tourists but also sometimes delivery drivers putting their faith on SatNav to find an address, and we all know that SatNav has a mean streak.

Well, in the old town of the City of Granada, cars getting jammed down a narrow street is almost a regular occurrence. Take Calle San Juan de los Reyes, which is one of the most emblematic streets in the Barrio del Albaicín. It runs parallel to the Río Darro and connects the Cuesta del Chapiz with the Church of San Gregorio Bético and Plaza Nueva.

This street gets narrower half way along, by which time the hapless driver is committed and already has somebody behind him or her. If they have a small car, they’ll get through, pulling the wing mirrors in but if its a large 4×4 (SUV), then they are going to loose paintwork.

Recently, a vehicle became trapped in the narrowest part of the said street (see photo) with pedestrians and homeowners along the street rolling their eyes and waiting for the inevitable. However, applying a lot of patience and incurring some bodywork damage, the driver did get through.

Remember, unless they have a sunroof and their car does get jammed, then they can’t get out of the vehicle, which is highly amusing for bystanders.
