New Waste-Collection Rates

The Motril Councillor for Urban Quality, Fernando Hernández explained about the details of the new municipal rubbish-collection rate.

He assured that it will not increase the bill for the vast majority of households in the municipality despite having to adapt municipal taxes to the new regulation, Ley 7/2022, de 8 de abril; thus complying with both State and EU regulations.

For some residents, this change will actually reduce the amount due, he claimed, because before had they paid more simply for living in prime areas; now, the new calculation is based on the square metres of the property rather than its location. In other words this new criterion replaces the old system of categories and locations to one tailored to the actual characteristics of each property.

He gave the example of an 80-sq/m flat, which will pay the same regardless of the neighbourhood it is in… without mentioning how much the owner would pay.

“We should recall that the previous increase in the waste-collection fee was imposed by the Central Government, following a 1,333,288 euro increase in treatment costs, supposedly so that Town councils would guarantee separate collection and the maintenance of recycling, which was something that Motril, we were already doing,” he pointed out.

“Motril Town Council is currently mailing out informational letters to explain the new status of this tax,” he added.

One problem, he said, is that, “many residents had direct debits set up for their bills. However, because this rate is a new assessment mandated by state regulations, we could not automatically include it in the special, payment system or direct debits.” Consequently, it is excluded from the 2026 municipal tax payment plan.

For 2027, he went on to explain, “residents who want the bill direct-debited or included in their special payment plan do not need to do anything; next year it will automatically split into the payment type they chose in the past.”
